Capabilities

The Colectica DDI Resolver enables discovery of web services and data services provided by an agency. An agency is an organization responsible for maintaining data or metadata. Agencies can configure the following information.

Once a client has discovered the location of one of these services, it can query and interact with the service.

The Colectica DDI Resolver is capable of resolving several query types.

DDI Agency
Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) agency identifiers uniquely identify agencies responsible for the various stages of the data life cycle or the metadata compilation.
DDI Uniform Resource Name
A DDI URN Resource Name (URN) consists of the DDI agency identifier along with other compontents that uniquely identify a piece of data.
ISO/IEC 11979 International Registration Data Identifier
Data elements registered under the provisions of part 6 of ISO/IEC 11179 are each assigned an International Registration Data Identifier (IRDI). This identifier value uniquely identifies the data element within the framework of part 6 of ISO/IEC 11179.

Built on the Domain Name System

When you connect to the Internet, whether by dialup connection, cable, DSL, or other means, your Internet Service Provider assigns you an IP address. This is a set of numbers that lets other computers on the Internet get in touch with you. An example of an IP address is 192.168.1.100.

Of course, when you connect to a web site or another type of server over the Internet, you usually don't type an IP address to get there. Instead you type something like http://www.example.com/. "example.com" is a domain name, or hostname.

The Domain Name System (DNS) is the system that translates hostnames into IP addresses for the entire Internet. Whenever you type a domain name into your web browser, DNS translates that name into an IP address with which your computer can communicate. Many ISPs and web hosting providers run DNS servers. Your web browser submits the hostname you wish to visit to a DNS server, and the DNS server returns the hostname's IP address.

DNS can also lookup information other than hostnames. The Colectica DDI Resolver takes advantage of this by using the DNS system to resolve repository and other service information based on DDI agency identifiers.
